Connoisseurs of wine have a notion that wine glasses are a part of the enjoyment of drinking such spirit. In fact, wine glasses have a history documented in the painting of the ‘Last Supper.' They were once known as drinking vessels made of gold and silver until the 16th century, when gold and silver were replaced by glass. After many transformations, wine glasses emerged with intricate designs made to compliment wine flavors.

There are certain rules about wine glasses every wine drinker eventually learns. Size counts, as well as the shape, thickness, temperature and appearance. The shape of a glass has significance: bigger wine glasses are more appealing than smaller. Bigger glasses showcase all aspects of wine, such as its flavor and aroma. Wine drinkers prefer thin wine glasses because they do not disrupt the wine's temperature. Wine glasses possessing attractive surfaces with an etched or tinted appearance affect the overall look of the wine. Another rule of wine enjoyment is the manner by which the glasses are held: by the stem. By holding onto the stem, the flavor of wine remains intact. The heat from a hand can warm the wine and change its flavor. These are essential characteristics of the nature and enjoyment of wine.

Another important rule of wine is distinguishing the proper wine glass for the flavor. Red wine should be consumed in certain wine glasses; the same is true of white wine. Red wine glasses should be larger, with a rounded bowl that is 10-16 ounces. Wine goblets are an ideal choice for bold, dark wines. The strength of red wine's aroma begs for the top of a glass to narrow inward in order to confine the aroma. White wine require wine glasses that are 8-14 ounces with medium size bowls. Tall stemmed glasses compliment white wines because of their light, airy aromas. Any wine connoisseur will be aware of the convention of wine glass choices.

Great wine glass collections are another component of wine drinking. As glassware is one of the most important aspects of drinking wine, purchasing the right wine glasses is essential. A top-end brand of wine glasses, Spiegelau, imports crystal stemware from Germany. Champagne flutes, wine glasses and stemless glasses are a part of their collection. Spiegelau's wine glasses are sold in sets of four; this crystal stemware retails for $37.95. The Riedel wine glass collection is another high-end company. Their collection of glassware is technologically enhanced. A new generation of bowl-shaped stemless glasses made of crystal, are a part of their collection. Riedel also features a line of basic wine glasses complimentary to any flavor wine. Riedel wine glasses are sold in sets of four and they retail for $41.95. An alternative for cheap, inexpensive wine glasses is Ace Mart drinking glassware. Ace Mart has a large inventory of attractive wine glasses. Ace Mart sells its products in bulks of 12 or 24 for under $100.

Wine is more than a liquid substance of vivid color and aroma. Wine connoisseurs learn these rules and turn the act of drinking wine into an almost religious ceremony. Tasting and consuming wine is a pleasurable event. With a little research, and good sense, drinking wine is an enjoyable pastime.
